Diamond jewelry was one of my hobbies back when I was a teenager going through high school. A lot of my time went to surfing the Internet or watching TV (movies and music was probably all a teenager needs besides the boring stuff like school). At times, and this varies between music videos and movies/TV shows, you’ll see actors/actresses or singers wear expensive jewelry and the first thing that would come to my mind is either how great that piece looks or how much that person had to lash out on something like that. From that point I would check out jewelry websites to read articles, look at diamond jewelry pictures and check prices out on occasion, and within time it had become a hobby of mine.

Few years past by, tons of information learned, and now I am working for a diamond jewelry company. Since this is the first diamond jewelry company I’m working for, I figured this: learn as much as possible, apply that to what you already know, use that to your advantage. I worked really hard over there and at times felt very unhappy with my job to say the least. We won’t get into that since it would make a lot of people unhappy ;] And plus, why? I did exactly what I set out to: learn as much as possible, apply that to what you already know, use that to your advantage. My learning experience was amazing, best way to learn is hands-on if you ask me, and the amount of important and “expensive” information I learned could never be taught in four years at college.

Now we can discuss a few things regarding what I learned at my previous job.

First and foremost, I learned how to tell the difference between a diamond and cubic zirconia. As easy as that sounds or seems, I never knew what to look for in a diamond when holding one. However this is something I learned by looking at diamonds for over a very long time. Knowing each and every characteristic helped me to finally see the difference in the two. I will post an article on this later.

Cheap Jewelry does exist. Just like myself, many people tend to watch TV, go on the Internet and see or hear how expensive the jewelry is. That in a way discourages you from even looking further. It’s true, if I saw a mens diamond ring i liked on TV and went online or to a store just to see a price tag of $20,000, it would be forgotten in the speed of light. This job has changed my mind about jewelry completely. We sold jewelry for fraction of the cost on the Internet with no problem (if only everyone knew that shopping online is 9 times out of 10 cheaper and more convenient ). Since there was no storefront we didn’t need many employees nor did we have big rent to pay, and with the right people (excluding me there probably were three or four others that did their job and excelled at it) business kept moving. We supplied the world with cheap diamond jewelry. The jewelry we sold for a thousand dollars, you would find for two or three thousand dollars at your local store or mall. Next, I learned the basics of Marketing and Advertising. Part of my job was to spread the word about the website I built for the company, and so I embarked on another learning journey. One thing about the way I learn things (if it’s not hands on) is by the use of Internet. The amount of information that’s available to us over the Internet is crazy, you just have to look for it. After months of spending my free time after work, or weekends, reading and studying the in’s and outs of marketing/advertising on the Internet I slowly began using the knowledge at work. The results I got were amazing. And I’m not talking about money, im talking about me finding ways to promote, advertise and market the site. Once again, it’s one thing to learning something after reading it and a completely different thing when your learning it hands on, or trying out what you have learned on field. I was able to increase the traffic to the website by over 300% since I started, as well as getting on the top of search engines result pages (probably the two most important things to an online business).
